I live in the mid-atlantic region of the United States, and I've been thinking about my future lately, considering where to study, get a job and live, and I thought I'd like to live somewhere up north. I'd like to be somewhere where there's a decent amount of snow in the winter, nice, scenic beauty in the summer and a decent standard of living and quality of life. Basically, where should I go? Any suggestions? While you're at it, any colleges or universities around there, too? What is a good place up north (or anywhere else) to start your life and live for a while?
I've been looking into some places in New York (Brockport, Rochester, Potsdam), since they're nice and northern and all near universities, both public and private. If you know anything about those places, please tell. As you can tell, I don't mind getting small or rural, so country doesn't bother me, and cities are fine with me too. Please, just any suggestions for living up north would be great, thanks!

I graduated from Boston University and would definitely recommend Boston as a city to go to school in. Lots of young people, beautiful and quaint, on the Charles River, lots of parks, lots of culture, great food and entertainment, public transportation, high standard of living, and the most amount of colleges and universities concentrated in one geographic area in the world. There are a lot of great colleges in western Massachusetts (Amherst, Hampshire, UMass, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Williams). That's a great area - snow, beautiful summers, lots of culture, small college towns, great food.

I used to live in Portland, Maine and if you like snow you might want to check out Portland...(I moved cause I dont' like the cold weather, but I loved the city)
the city itself has about 100,000 people so it's kinda small, but there are still tons of restaurants, a decent mall, and a great downtown area, semi-pro hockey and baseball teams, on the ocean so it's great in summer, colleges nearby are University of Southern Maine, Maine College of Art, St Joseph's college, Southern Maine Community College, Bowdoin...and it's only about an hour and 15 minutes from Boston.
check it out.

Ah heck if you're going to head north then really do it. I went to a small liberal arts university in Anchorage, Alaska called Alaska Pacific University. It meets all of your criteria, check it out. They recruit heavily (or used to when I was there) in the Northeast so you may even be able to find some alums near you.

Alaska's awesome! There's not even sales tax!

I spent last year in Buffalo, NY and found it to be a very nice place. Plenty of interesting places to eat, great symphony orchestra, and really cheap houses!
Now I'm back in Duluth, MN where I grew up. If you like snow and below-zero weather, this is the place for you!

Wisconsin has plenty of what you're looking for. Big cities such as Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay or Appleton to name of few. Terrific colleges such as Marquette beside the multitude of UW campuses. Small towns galore and not too far from the bigger cities. Snow? Milwaukee's had 23 inches in the month of December so far although that's a bit unusual. Summer is beautiful. So much green-woods, meadows, cliffs...flowers and more flowers....Lake Michigan besides many, many other lakes.....
