Can i live in Hawaii?

OK...here is the story...i live in LA but i really wish to move to Hawaii/Oahu. Did You saw movie " The Big Lebowski"..? I'm that kind of guy as the Dude was...so you can imagine i don't need much to live. I'm 33. Single. I don't have kids or wife and i'm not planning either...I'm not after money so i don't look for any career in my life...I look for some really really small place to live...bed and toilet would be great...i don't have car either...i love to use a bike...so...the question is...If i move there how much i have to earn to live and not worried being homeless...I was thinking about Kailua/Kaneohe, North Shore or Honolulu as well...Please give me some clues...I just wish to live in peace with nature but also had a place to "hide from the rain"

Studio apartments will cost you around $1,000 a month on the low side and not in the best neighborhoods.

Also, most of Oahu streets are not bike friendly, i.e. look out for the drivers. Rapid transit via The Bus is pretty good and you can take your bike with you.

Look into sharing a place with roommates. These arrangements may bring your costs down to $500 a month. But most of your housing opportunities will be in Honolulu, which is not as scenic as the North Shore, Kailua or Kaneohe.

But anything is possible, so check out the Honolulu Advertiser and Starbulletin online to look for housing and job opportunities.

I was going to say that Oahu for the most part is not a tropical paradise, but I noticed you're from LA, so maybe to you it will be. Good luck!

The North Shore dude. Work at a burger shack, live in a beach shack and beach cruiser bike your way around town. It's and easy life up there and hardly anyone is materialistic. You're expected to just relax and 'kick it.' Honolulu is a large American City, Kaneohe/Kailua is the burbs for Honolulu expat's. Honolulu/Kaneohe/Kailua is crowded and you'll get judged as a bum. The North Shore, you'll be admired for being a bum.

Rent will run you about $1500/month for a studio in most locations IF you can find it.

If you're not looking for a career, I'm sure that there are lots of places in retail or the restaurant business that are looking for someone who just wants to live here and pay their rent and food bills.

As far as food costs go, it depends on what you like to eat and whether or not you'll be cooking for yourself. Plan to spend at least $400/month for food if you're cooking for yoursef and double that if you're going to eat out all the time.
